Nutmeg originated from here.

By 750 CE, this city had already grown into the world’s marketplace for nutmeg and other spices.

Active exporting by the Bandanese at this port made nutmeg a global commodity.

In the 1500s, nutmeg traveled east to this region.

In 1511, this European country took control of Melaka but was unable to directly trade with Bandanese merchants for nutmeg.

In 1599, this European country gained control of trade in the Bandas, leading to years of deportations, executions and enslavement.

North Sumatra, and the islands Sulawesi and Java are where nutmeg is largely grown, making this country one of the largest producers of the spice.
